about

DoomCannon’s sophomore single ‘Times’ features contemplative North London-based lyricist, Lex Amor. Hot on the heels of his debut ‘Amalgamation, supported by Tom Ravenscroft BBC 6 Music, Jazz FM, Worldwide FM, NTS, Totally Wired Radio & Mi-Soul; DoomCannon shares this intimate soundtrack to his Summer 2020 consumed by worldwide outcries of racial and social injustice. ‘Times’ featuring Lex Amor is available across all digital streaming platforms on Friday 11th March 2022 via Brownswood Recordings.

Opening with an intimate piano solo that builds like the warmth of a sunrise. DoomCannon constructed the melodies with an expansive creative breadth to harmoniously weave melancholic guitar moments and enchanting saxophone riffs. Lex Amor’s distinctive vocals slowly infiltrate with quietly reassuring whispers, ‘We knew how to chase the sun, run before your feet get weak, run before you lose your tongue. Know your voice before you speak, Wait until the days come.’ Echoing a solemness reverberating through the Black British community during the summer of 2020, a pensive time surrounding identity and belonging as DoomCannon expresses, “When creating the track I was inspired by galvanising songs like Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Mortal Man’ with a message prophasising an uprising of empowerment in the community. This really resonated with me as this was around the same time as the Black Lives Matter protests in the middle of the pandemic in 2020.” Accumulating to a melodious zenith where the string quartet acutely contrasts with the earthy, Dilla-esque drum beat, creating a flow of tension and consonance throughout, reflecting the mood of an unprecedented time.

DoomCannon is a London-based composer, producer & multi-instrumentalist heading up forward-thinking, improvised Jazz-inspired outfits like Project Karnak and TriForce. In 2022 DoomCannon’s focus is releasing his solo project. Musical director for award-winning vocalist, Celeste, he’s performed live at the Brit Awards and Later with Jools Holland. Gaining respect as a leader in the scene, DoomCannon has toured internationally as a member of Nubya Garcia’s band and invited in his own right to run an ongoing bi-monthly residency at the legendary Ronnie Scotts. Presenting his solo project at Abbey Road Studios, selected via Jazz Re:freshed as part of the SXSW/ British Council collaboration, the stage is set for DoomCannon to raise the bar again in 2022 and beyond.
